Mt. Mayon Volcano, Albay: An Awesome ATV Adventure

Mt. Mayon is in Albay Province in the Bicol region, about 500 kilometres south-east of Manila. Legazpi City is the main gateway. Most people fly in with a one hour and fifteen minute flight, or make the long drive or bus ride south.

Mt. Mayon is one of those places I’d wanted to visit for years. Ever since I first saw a photo of its almost perfectly symmetrical cone in a travel brochure more than 20 years earlier, I’d been fascinated by it.

Standing 2,462 metres tall, Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines and one of the country’s most recognisable natural landmarks. It’s an absolutely awesome sight, particularly when the clouds clear and you can see the entire volcano from top to bottom.

I finally made the trip around 2012, driving down from Manila with my nephew for a weekend in Legazpi City.

And while seeing Mayon in person was fantastic, it was an unplanned ATV adventure through the surrounding villages, rivers and volcanic landscape that really made the trip.

Best Time to Visit Mt. Mayon

March to May is generally the best time to visit Mt. Mayon, particularly if you’re planning an ATV adventure.

  • March to May: Typically warmer, drier conditions and better opportunities for clear volcano views.
  • December to February: Cooler temperatures, although cloud cover and rainfall can still affect visibility.
  • June to November: Greater risk of heavy rainfall, typhoons and muddy or flooded ATV trails.

Mayon frequently disappears behind clouds, sometimes for hours at a time. Even during the drier months, there’s no guarantee you’ll see the summit.

I’d recommend allowing at least two days around Legazpi rather than relying on a single afternoon. That gives you a better chance of catching the volcano when it’s completely clear.

My recommendation: Aim for March or April, check the weather forecast and book your ATV experience for a clear morning if possible.

Things to Do Around Mt. Mayon

Ride an ATV Towards Mt. Mayon

This was easily the highlight of my visit. ATV tours take you along rough trails, through shallow rivers and across volcanic terrain towards designated viewpoints near the volcano’s base. Routes vary in length, difficulty and permitted access.

Visit Daraga Church

We also visited this historic church, which sits on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding area. It’s a beautiful old building and worth checking out while exploring Legazpi and Daraga.

Check Out Cagsawa Ruins

The famous surviving bell tower is a reminder of Mayon’s devastating 1814 eruption. We didn’t visit Cagsawa ourselves, but it’s one of the area’s best-known attractions and a popular spot for photographing the volcano.

Enjoy the Views from Sumlang Lake

Another popular spot for photographing Mayon, with the volcano rising behind the lake. It’s a good addition to a sightseeing day around Albay, particularly when visibility is good.

My Mt. Mayon ATV Experience

My nephew and I hadn’t really planned the ATV adventure. We’d driven down primarily to see the volcano, and I think we discovered the ATV tours once we arrived.

I’m bloody glad we did.

Our ride lasted approximately two hours, taking us along dirt tracks, through small villages and eventually along and through a shallow river towards the base of Mayon.

One of the things I really enjoyed was riding through the villages and watching the locals going about their everyday lives.

There we were, completely blown away by this enormous volcano towering above us, while the locals seemed almost oblivious to it. I suppose when you’ve lived alongside something your entire life, you get used to it.

Eventually, we reached a lookout area surrounded by hundreds of volcanic rocks.

Standing there and looking up at Mayon’s almost perfectly pointed summit was an unbelievable experience.

I remember feeling absolutely tiny, like an ant standing at the foot of this monster. Knowing how much destruction the volcano had caused over the centuries, and realising the enormous power sitting right in front of me, sent chills up my spine.

I’ve visited several volcanoes around the Philippines, but Mayon was the one I’d wanted to see for years. And it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Would I recommend the ATV adventure? Absolutely. In fact, if you’re going all the way to Legazpi to see Mayon, I’d put it right at the top of your list.

ATV Tours and Costs

When we visited around 2012, our ride of roughly two hours cost about ₱1,500. Today’s prices depend on the operator, trail, vehicle and how close the permitted route gets to the volcano. Longer lava-field trails generally cost more than short introductory rides.

Confirm the route, duration, guide arrangements and total price before booking.

Mayon is an active volcano, so trail access can change depending on volcanic activity and restrictions imposed by PHIVOLCS and local authorities. Never assume the trails are operating simply because the weather is good.

How Many Days Do You Need?

If your main objective is seeing Mt. Mayon and enjoying an ATV adventure, two nights in Legazpi City is a good starting point.

That’s what we did. We drove down from Manila on Friday, spent Saturday exploring Mayon and returned home on Sunday.

If you’re flying into Bicol, I’d recommend three or four days so you can explore more of Albay and neighbouring Sorsogon. You could also add Caramoan for island hopping elsewhere in the Bicol region.

Suggested 4-Day Legazpi and Sorsogon Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Legazpi. Settle into your accommodation, explore the city and enjoy your first views of Mayon. Visit the waterfront or find somewhere to enjoy dinner.

Day 2: Mt. Mayon adventure. Spend the morning riding an ATV along the volcanic trails. In the afternoon, visit Daraga Church, Cagsawa Ruins and other nearby viewpoints.

Day 3: Donsol, Sorsogon. Travel approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to Donsol, famous for its seasonal whale shark encounters. Join a regulated whale shark watching excursion if conditions permit. Consider staying overnight for a more relaxed visit.

Day 4: Return and depart. Return to Legazpi if you’ve stayed in Donsol. Depending on your flight time, visit Sumlang Lake or enjoy a final view of Mayon before heading home.

Donsol’s whale shark season generally runs from November to June, with February to May often providing better opportunities. Sightings are never guaranteed, and this itinerary is a suggested trip rather than one I personally completed.

Where to Stay in Legazpi City

Legazpi City is the most convenient base for exploring Mt. Mayon, with plenty of accommodation, restaurants and transport options. I’d recommend staying somewhere central, particularly if you’re planning to visit several attractions around Albay.

The city centre is convenient for restaurants and shopping, while the waterfront around Embarcadero offers views towards Albay Gulf and, when the weather cooperates, Mt. Mayon.

Where We Stayed: Embarcadero Hotel

We stayed at Embarcadero Hotel (formerly Ellis Ecotel), which was part of the Embarcadero de Legazpi shopping and entertainment complex. I remember this place particularly because the hotel was actually inside the complex. You’d walk through the shopping area to reach the accommodation, which was quite unusual.

We stayed for two nights, arriving on Friday and leaving on Sunday. The location was convenient for our weekend visit, and having shops and other facilities within the complex was certainly handy.

How to Get to Mt. Mayon

Mt. Mayon is in Albay Province, approximately 500 kilometres south-east of Metro Manila. Legazpi City is the main gateway for visitors.

Flying from Manila or Cebu

The main airport serving Legazpi is Bicol International Airport (DRP), in Daraga, Albay. Direct flights from Manila generally take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Direct services from Cebu may be available depending on current airline schedules, so check before planning your connections. Allow 20 to 40 minutes by road from the airport to Legazpi City.

Driving from Manila

This is how we travelled. My nephew and I drove down from Metro Manila in my car, taking approximately 12 hours each way. It’s a long drive, particularly when you’re only spending two nights there, although we enjoyed the road trip. Allow 10 to 13 hours depending on traffic, road conditions and stops. The main route follows the South Luzon Expressway and the Maharlika Highway through Southern Luzon towards Bicol.

Travelling by Bus

Long-distance buses connect Metro Manila with Legazpi and other parts of Albay, commonly departing from terminals including Cubao and PITX, depending on the operator. Allow 11 to 14 hours. Overnight services are a practical option if you want to avoid losing an entire day travelling.

Good to Know Before You Go

  • Check volcanic activity: Mayon’s alert level can change, restricting access to certain areas and trails.
  • Plan for clouds: Even on sunny days, Mayon’s summit can disappear behind clouds.
  • Book a suitable ATV route: Longer trails offer more variety than short introductory rides.
  • Bring sun protection: ATV adventures can be hot, dusty and exposed to the elements.
  • Allow extra time: Two nights gives you more flexibility for weather and sightseeing.

Safety update: Access around the volcano changes with its alert level, and entry is restricted inside the danger zone when activity rises. Check the latest PHIVOLCS advisories before travelling.

Dezza’s Tip

If you’re going to make the effort to visit Mt. Mayon, don’t just stand there taking photos of it. Get yourself on an ATV and explore the surrounding landscape.

Seeing the volcano from a distance is fantastic, but riding through the villages, crossing the river and eventually standing among those enormous lava rocks was what made the experience so memorable for me.

It’s one of those adventures I’m really glad we stumbled across. And if you’ve got another couple of days available, consider combining Legazpi with a trip to Donsol in Sorsogon. Between Mayon’s volcanic landscape and the possibility of swimming with whale sharks, you’ve got the makings of an absolutely awesome Bicol adventure.
