Puerto Galera: A Tropical Getaway Close to Manila
Puerto Galera is one of the best beach destinations within easy reach of Manila. It sits on the northern coast of Oriental Mindoro, about four to five hours from Manila by road and ferry via Batangas Port. It’s a great place to enjoy beautiful beaches, fantastic snorkelling, island hopping and a bit of nightlife without having to catch a flight.
I first visited Puerto Galera around 2005, when I was still fairly new to the Philippines. I’d heard plenty of good things about the place, so I took the family down for a weekend getaway. I was absolutely blown away by the beaches, coral reefs and laid-back atmosphere.
I’ve been back several times since, and what I particularly like about Puerto Galera is its variety. You can chill on a beach, head out snorkelling, stay at a nice resort or enjoy the bars and restaurants around Sabang.
It’s not quite Boracay, Coron or El Nido, but considering how accessible it is from Manila, I still reckon Puerto Galera is a fantastic destination.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Galera
January to May is generally the best period to visit, with March to May particularly good for beach holidays, snorkelling and island hopping.
- January to February: Generally drier and a little cooler, although northeast monsoon winds can make some boat trips rough.
- March to May: Hotter, sunnier weather and generally favourable conditions for beach activities.
- June to October: Southwest monsoon season brings more rain and occasional rough seas, with possible ferry disruptions.
- November to December: Conditions often improve, although northeast monsoon winds can affect exposed beaches and crossings.
I’d personally aim for March or April, preferably outside Holy Week and major public holidays when accommodation prices and crowds can increase.
Things to Do in Puerto Galera
White Beach
Probably the nicest stretch of sandy beach in Puerto Galera. It’s not powdery white like Boracay, but it’s still a great spot for swimming, relaxing and spending time with the family. It’s become considerably more developed since my first visit.
Sabang and the Laguna Beaches
Sabang is the livelier part of Puerto Galera, with plenty of bars, restaurants and dive centres. Nearby Big La Laguna and Small La Laguna offer a more relaxed resort atmosphere. Sabang’s waterfront can be a little crowded and untidy, so don’t expect pristine beaches everywhere.

- Small La Laguna
Tamaraw Falls
Around 15 kilometres from Puerto Galera town, Tamaraw Falls is a pleasant stop on a sightseeing trip. I’ve been there, and while they’re not the most spectacular waterfalls I’ve seen, the cascading water and refreshing swimming areas make them worth checking out.

Muelle Bay
Puerto Galera’s historic natural harbour, associated with the Spanish galleon era. It’s a picturesque area with sheltered waters, boats and coastal scenery, and another interesting place to explore beyond the main beaches.

Luca’s Cucina Italiana: Worth Visiting for the Pizza Alone
One restaurant I’d definitely recommend is Luca’s Cucina Italiana, located on Talipanan Beach, just beyond White Beach. I ate here on one of my previous visits, and the pizzas were absolutely sensational. It’s a lovely, open-air beachfront restaurant with ocean views and a relaxed atmosphere. In fact, I’d almost go as far as saying it’s worth visiting Puerto Galera, or at least making the trip to White Beach, just for the pizza! It’s been a few years since I last visited, but judging by the reviews, it’s still a popular spot.
Island Hopping, Snorkelling and Diving
One of my favourite things to do in Puerto Galera is hire a private boat and spend the day exploring the surrounding beaches, islands and snorkelling spots.
I’ve done this several times, and it’s absolutely awesome. Unlike destinations such as El Nido and Coron, where organised island-hopping packages are common, I’ve generally negotiated directly with a local boatman and arranged our own itinerary.
The snorkelling is a real highlight. Puerto Galera sits beside the Verde Island Passage, an area renowned for its incredible marine biodiversity. I’ve seen some amazing coral and marine life here.

- Medio Island
I haven’t personally scuba-dived in Puerto Galera, although several friends who have absolutely love it. With the number of dive centres around Sabang and the Laguna beaches, it’s easy to understand why the area has such a strong diving reputation.
If you enjoy getting out on the water, I’d definitely make time for a boat trip.
How Many Days Do You Need?
I’d recommend three days and two nights for a first visit.
That’s enough time to enjoy the beaches, spend a day island hopping and snorkelling, and check out some of the local restaurants and nightlife.
If you’re into scuba diving or want to explore more of Oriental Mindoro, four or five days would be even better.
Where to Stay in Puerto Galera
There are plenty of accommodation options, from affordable beachfront resorts to more upmarket places overlooking the ocean.
- Big La Laguna and Small La Laguna: My preferred areas for a relaxing resort stay, with convenient access to Sabang.
- Sabang: Best for nightlife, restaurants, bars and diving.
- White Beach: A good option for families and travellers wanting a sandy beach, although it can get busy and isn’t as quiet as it used to be.
Where I’ve Stayed
Out of the Blue Resort
I’ve stayed here and definitely recommend it. Built into the hillside overlooking Small La Laguna, it has modern, spacious rooms, balconies with ocean views, an excellent swimming pool and fantastic food. It’s a great option if you want somewhere comfortable to relax. You can see the resort in my full video further down this page.

El Galleon Beach Resort
I’ve visited El Galleon several times and really enjoy the waterfront atmosphere. Sitting out by the water with a drink, watching the sun go down, is absolutely unbelievable. It’s another resort I’d happily recommend, although I haven’t personally stayed overnight.
I’ve also stayed around White Beach and in a hillside Airbnb overlooking Sabang on previous visits.
How to Get to Puerto Galera
The most practical route from Manila is to travel to Batangas Port and catch a ferry across to Oriental Mindoro.
From Manila or Makati
- Private car: Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to Batangas Port via SLEX and STAR Tollway, depending on traffic.
- Public bus: Take a Batangas Pier-bound bus from a suitable Metro Manila terminal, typically around 2 to 4 hours depending on your departure point and traffic.
From Batangas Port
Passenger ferries generally take around 1 to 2 hours to reach Puerto Galera, depending on the vessel and arrival port. Balatero Port is a common arrival point, with road transport available to White Beach, Sabang and the Laguna beaches.
If direct Puerto Galera services aren’t suitable, ferries to Calapan provide an alternative, followed by a road journey to Puerto Galera of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Check the latest ferry schedules, operating ports and fares before travelling, particularly during monsoon season.
Good to Know Before You Go
- Sabang is livelier, while the Laguna beaches offer a more relaxed resort atmosphere.
- White Beach has lovely sand, but don’t expect the powdery texture of Boracay.
- Arrange boat trips locally and confirm the full price before setting off.
- Ferry services can be disrupted by rough seas, particularly during monsoon season.
- Bring cash for smaller establishments, local transport and boat operators.
Dezza’s Tip
If you’re visiting Puerto Galera for the first time, I’d recommend staying around Big La Laguna or Small La Laguna. You’ll have access to some great resorts and snorkelling, with Sabang nearby if you want to head out for drinks or dinner.
Definitely organise a private boat trip if you can. It’s one of the best ways to explore the area, and the snorkelling can be absolutely amazing. Boat prices have gone up a lot since my visit in 2018, so always agree the full price with the boatman before you set off.
